Tuesday January 4

I have the opportunity to walk us through the History books of the Old Testament. Joshua is our first book. It begins with a marking of the end of the Exodus period and the death of Moses. The children of Israel are moving into the Promised Land with a new group of leaders that have never been in these positions before. Joshua has now taken the place of Moses. Joshua chapter 1 begins with God notifying Joshua of Moses' death. This had to be difficult as Joshua had walked closely with Moses as his (right hand man.) Joshua has received the order to move forward as the leader of the people and receives certain promises that are directly contingent to his and the people's obedience. Has God called you to do something new? Has the idea of it shaken you up? You will notice that our reading begins with God's calling today but it ends with God revealing His presence at the end of chapter 5 as the Commander of The Army of The Lord. God will never call you to do something and then send you alone. In the Great Commission God doesn't call us to make disciples and share our faith with others and leave us alone to then do it Matt. 28:18-20 nor does God leave us alone to accomplish His purposes in any area of life. We even see when Joshua sent the spies into Jericho that God had already gone before him and the people had heard of His works and when they did "their hearts melted." 2:11 Rahab was also prepared to receive them and we see a statement of her own personal faith in God as she says "for the Lord your God. He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath." 2:11b God has gone before Joshua in his leadership decisions. Has God called you or to use last sunday's sermon do you have a burden that you can't let go of? Obey Him and know that He is with you.
